I love to sing and nothing brings me more pleasure than Christmas Carols. When I was a tiny little girl, I was half convinced that carols had been named for...guess who?   Or at least that it was a happy coincidence.

One year, my grandparents made several trips down to Kansas City, where we lived, during the fall to make it possible for my sister and me to attend practices so we could participate in the Christmas Eve program at the Culbertson Methodist Chapel where Grandma and Grandpa went to church their whole married life and where we kids attended Sunday School when we were visiting them.

Aunt Violet rehearsed us and played both piano and organ for that program as she did for almost every service and church event for her whole life. It was a late evening, candle light service and I am so glad that we got to do it at least that one time, as it was a wonderful experience. The well-remembered, beloved Christmas Carols, the fellowship with so many people that knew and cared about us and that we cared for in return, and the beautifully decorated pine bough, poinsettia and candle lit sanctuary all wove a magical feel about that special lovely night. Silent Night... ..Holy Night.....

How glorious it all seems to me, even now, so many years later.

When I was in 8th Grade at East High School there was a Christmas Assembly for the entire school. Eighth Grade chorus had several group numbers and a solo with the vignette of the Manger scene and the soloist to be Mary. The song was "What Child is This" and I was excited to be chosen and felt pretty well rehearsed. However on assembly day it suddenly hit me that I was going to be doing this in front of the entire school and I was Terrified that I'd mess up.

I wish I could tell you about the actual performance but, even after all these years, I can't be objective about it. I have a picture in my yearbook to verify that I was indeed there in the scene, doing what I was suppose to be doing. My Mom and friends told me that I did a good job and Mr. Mabbit, my teacher said all the right things (and I didn't fail his class) so I guess it wasn't a disaster but I pretty much decided then and there that I wasn't cut out for solo singing and never went after such an experience again. I'd rather sing as part of an ensemble and save my solos for the shower.
